i called cogeco the other day as my internet was running slow . i was told that my 100BASE-T connection wasn't good enough for ultimate 55 because of network overhead . im not sure if this is true as i was able to get these speeds before. can someone clear this up ? i thought ultimate 55 was 55Mbps and a 100BASE-T supports up to 100 Mbps . im just a bit confused .

[TV] Anyone else find a lot of channels have poor signal quality?
I find a lot of stations will consistently drop sound or freeze up for a few frames before continuing. CW and AMC for example I find are pretty terrible, but I've found NBC can be pretty bad as well although it seems to happen most when I'm watching American Ninja Warrior(that could be unrelated, but it's very annoying).
Is this Cogeco's issue at all? Or do they just forward the feed on from some other source and that is where the problem generally is?
Oh and I'm on TiVo if that matters at all.

Why is there 35% more bandwidth in Ontario than Quebec?
I'm very curious as to why someone 20km away from me gets 95GB monthly bandwidth vs. my 70GB for the same Express 15 package. Are bits and bytes 35% more expensive in Quebec than Ontario?

Outage Sept 22
Yesterday, just after 5 PM, I lost all Cogeco services, (TV, Internet and Phone) and services did not return until 12:30AM, an outage of 7.5 hours.I'm located in the Town of Lincoln. Apparently, there was an outage in North St. Catharines yesterday too, but it was earlier as TV was back on just before 5 PM. Haven't been able to find any info which caused the outage. Anyone know of what happened?

[INTERNET] SamKnows Monitoring/Bandwidth Usage Stopped
I recently signed up for the SamKnows internet speed monitoring that the CRTC is conducting. Checking over the last couple of days my speed of 30 down 10 up has been pretty consistent. But since I put the monitor (a TP Link 3600 router) in (June 15th at 8pm) I haven't gotten any updates on my bandwidth usage on the MyCogeco site since Wednesday. Now someone has pointed out in another forum that any bandwidth used by the SamKnows hardware Cogeco doesn't count as part of my usage (https://www.measuringbroadbandcanada.com/faq) . Just wondering if anyone else signed up and is having the same problem.
Just for anyone wondering here's a couple of screenshot and some info:

[INTERNET] Possible New customer questions for 120/10
I need to get a second internet connection that is as fast as possible.
Currently I am with Start but I can't get 120 through them, so here are my questions.
1. I am currently with Start as mentioned and would like to stay with them. I would also like to have the 120 at the same time. I'm sure this is possible, just wanted to check. Although my node does feel a little sluggish during peak.
2. What modem will I get as part of the fee?
3. I do not want a bundle, I do not care for anything else, I will pay outright for the full 120/10 with 425GB Cap, What is the total first bill I will have to pay with all taxes and fees?
4. I need this running ASAP, I do not want any BS about setup or install. IMS has already come in to "install" my Start service(they crimped some new ends), and Cogeco has already fixed my temporary line. I want to go to my local Cogeco store, pick up a modem, pay for the service and get it provisioned same day. Is this possible or do I have to wait for a modem to come in and pay for more "install" services that I don't need.
I want to get this done as fast as possible with minimal hoops. Walk in, pay and leave with a modem that is provisioned and ready to rock, or at the worst, a modem I have to call for provisioning when I get home.
Thanks again guys!

Out of Ideas SLOW SPEED Cogeco for over a month HELP!
Our Connection Plan is 55MBPS Download 10MBPS Upload Unlimited
I do not know what else to do? We have had a technician out 3 times. First time due to disconnects and slow speeds. He was very professional and changed the heads on the lines said everything looked good. He replaced our Agris wifi modem with another one. Then we had a problem connecting our cell phones to the wifi, some things would connect and others wouldn't. This seemed to get temporarily fixed after contacting Cogeco Supoort over the phone.
Then I started to notice extreme slowdowns so I ran speedtests on the speedtest website. I would get 1-4MBPS / Sec on Download and I would get my advertised 10MBPS on upload. I thought maybe this was due to congestion so I went to bed and tried again the next night and was met with the same results. I called Cogeco Support again and they said they could see packet loss and majority of the time this could be fixed on their end but it has a 48hr window. So then I was stuck with slow speeds for another two days when I called after 48hrs of slow speeds the Support Agent on the other end said they were working on the problem right now. The next day I checked my speeds in the morning and it seemed to work.
Now a couple of days ago I started to experience slow downs again and our cell phones would connect to Wifi randomly but majority of the time it wouldnt connect. So I called tech support again this time the Agent was really understanding and very nice. She ran some tests and determined it was packet loss again and booked a technician to come out 2 days later( it was saturday came on monday).
The Tech came on Monday and I asked him if getting a router would help he said yes, so I bought a new router and he came back today to install a different modem. So here I am right now brand new modem, new router and 3.88MBPS Download and 10.63MBPS Upload. It was working great when he left and all afternoon until 730pm. I understand there can be congestion in the area at times but to drop almost 52 MBPS is not right.
I do not know what else to do I am completly baffled. I come here looking for an answer and solution to my problem. All the Technicians and Tech Support have been outstanding to be honest. I just need to get this working please.

[INTERNET] Cogeco Bandwith Meter 1.0 released!
Hi!
I just released the first version of my software "Cogeco Bandwith Meter". The software lets you access to your Internet usage data quickly by double clicking an icon in the tray tool on your start bar. At first I was building this software only for me but I figured some other people might want to use it too.
The software itself doesn't actually calculate any data usage. It grabs the usage data directly from Cogeco's website. I do know Cogeco is not always accurate but that's what they use to bill us in the end!
You can find it there : http://patrickhuard.quebec/?page=projectCgoMeter
If you have any question, found any bug, or have any feature request, let me know, I'll see what I can do.

[INTERNET] Micro outages
For the last couple of days, I've been getting 1-5 second outages every couple of hours, with about 7 of them yesterday. Just had an outage a few moments ago.
Is there anything going on in the Waterdown area? I know things are constantly breaking down here, for one reason or another, but is there any way to possibly fix this? Also, while I'm never watching television at the time of these outages, I believe the TV goes down as well, as when I turn it on a few hours later, the image is frozen, or in a loop. Changing the channel fixes this.
I've also noticed that the congestion is slowly coming back, though it's hardly as severe as it once was. Instead of 250 download, I'm getting an average of 240. I just ran a test right now, and it's actually down to 217.
Any idea what's up? Is Cogeco just slowly dying, or what?

TiVo installed yesterday. Some issues...
I had a tech in yesterday to install TiVo in my house - a box on the main floor and a box in the basement. I live in a 2400 sq/ft 2 storey with all the connections and Arris router being placed in my basement.
My house is wired with Ethernet and my previous setup had my Apple Airport Express connected from the jack in the office (second floor) to the Cogeco modem in the basement. This meant that the router was in the "middle of the house", roughly speaking.
When the tech showed up yesterday he offered to turn the wireless off on the Arris and continue to let my Apple Airport run the wireless network.
When he left things were okay but the iOS app would not work on my iPad. From what I can gather on this forum, the iOS device needs to be on the same network as the TiVo's. Are they not on the same network by virtue of the fact my Airport is plugged right into the Arris?
Secondly, and more concerning, the "slave box" in my basement stopped working after about 30 mins at which time it froze. I powered everything off (including the router) and when everything came back online the TV worked fine, but again, froze after a half hour or so.
Since then the basement slave says that it "cannot detect the Living Room DVR" (the one upstairs) and it still drops the signal every twenty mins or so.
Oh, and one more issue. When I tried disabling my router and using the Arris, things worked okay - even the streaming on iOS. Unfortunately, the moment I go upstairs in my house things start getting pretty spotty.
When the iOS app did work though, it was always utilizing closed captioning
I guess my questions are
1) How do I configure things so I can continue to use my own router but also use the iOS apps on my mobile devices?
2) What's going on with the slave in my basement?
3) Why does the Cogeco iOS app insist on showing closed captioning? (Scrolling text on screen that shows what is being said)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Considering Cogeco
Hi All,
I am currently on Vmedia who have been doling out crippling traffic shaping for the last month in my area. I can download nothing in the evening and I'm not talking torrents, just general use like android apps. Streaming is a joke with netflix capped at 720p at all hours of the day and other streaming services can be totally unusable. I've complained and complained but have basically been told they are throttling torrent in prime time but everything else should be fine especially outside of prime time, but this is not the case.
So considering going to Cogeco itself instead of just piggybacking through Vmedia. Plus their prices don't seem to bad even though it's not unlimited.
My question is: Does Cogeco enable the same terrible traffic shaping and would I be wasting my time switching? I live in the Welland area.
Thanks
