Billing: Could someone from Cogeco answer

$

why a customer is billed the $75 early termination fee even if one has paid the whole contract term (by canceling a service a few days in the already paid, last month, for example). A more reasonable (and honest) charge would have been the lesser of $75 or the remaining contract period charge. This way, Cogeco would not have to refund anything and the customer would not have been hit by this over the board charge. Practices like that are among the ones that give the bad reputation to the major telecom companies, whether it is Cogeco, Bell or Rogers.

Cogeco route to Bell residential goes through US?

Just wondering if there is no local route to get to a Bell customer, as it gets annoying when it causes Plex server to buffer when trying to watch from Bell DSL internet (50mbps down / 10mbps up). Here is a traceroute to a Bell IP: Tracing route to ssvlon3939w-lp130-06-67-70-20-XXX.dsl.bell.ca [67.70.20.XXX]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 8 ms 8 ms 11 ms 10.67.128.1 2 8 ms 9 ms 8 ms 10.0.67.113 3 7 ms 7 ms 8 ms 10.0.18.78 4 15 ms 11 ms 12 ms 10.0.18.25 5 13 ms 14 ms 10 ms xe-8-3-1.bar1.Buffalo1.Level3.net [4.28.234.1] 6 20 ms 22 ms 21 ms ae-1-6.bar3.Toronto1.Level3.net [4.69.218.46] 7 26 ms 27 ms 27 ms 4.31.208.62 8 * * * Request timed out. 9 * * * Request timed out. 10 * * * Request timed out. 11 * * * Request timed out. 12 27 ms 31 ms 27 ms ssvlon3939w-lp130-06-67-70-20-1.dsl.bell.ca [67.70.20.1] For comparison, here is a traceroute to a Rogers IP: Tracing route to CPE9050ca1c4d23-CM9050ca1c4d20.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [99.246.13.XXX]over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms 10.67.128.1 2 9 ms 11 ms 11 ms 10.0.67.125 3 12 ms 12 ms 11 ms 10.0.18.73 4 11 ms 10 ms 11 ms 222-0-226-24.cgocable.net [24.226.0.222] 5 11 ms 9 ms 11 ms 22-cgw01.bloor.rmgt.net.rogers.com [209.148.235.29] 6 14 ms 10 ms 10 ms 209.148.233.178 7 11 ms 12 ms 14 ms 69.63.242.198 Does Cogeco not peer with Bell anywhere in Canada, because as of right now it appears that transit in Buffalo is used to get there.

Speeds range from 12 Mbit to under 100 MBit per sec for a 1 Gbit???

Yes, that is correct. I pay for the 1 Gbit connection but today I absolutely lost my s*** when we could not for the life of us, connect to Youtube on the TV in the next room. Let me preface this by saying that there was a time when the speeds were "OK." Sure, I was never ever anywhere close to 1 Gbit, but I was able to AT LEAST get 5-600 Mbit per sec. It was rare but for the most part, was fine. But think how insane that is: I get less than half (usually more like 1/8th) of the speed I pay for, and I am too scared to downgrade for fear that it will just mean getting the same fraction of speed for the new downgraded speed. So I did the usual, disconnected every single device in the home, whether hard wired or wifi, and ran a laptop (with absolutely no apps running) with a Cat 6 ethernet conection straight to the modem. Yes, I tried multiple cables and tried all of the ports on the modem. No difference. And as I said before, I have done this in the past and the speeds were "fine" but for the last few days, it has been a crawl. Here is what Ookla's speedtest gave me: On Firefox: 37 ping 81 down 30 up On Chrome: 9 ping 13 down 31 up On Explorer: 47 ping 83 down 27 up I also tried a chromebook and it was essentially the same. Anyone have any ideas? Nothing has changed here. I'm at a loss. Literally.....

No 5G listed on my available networks?

I can't see my 5G option for my network listed on the available networks to connect to? This happened before and I needed to contact Cogeco (which they corrected) but what is going on there? Why do I need to contact them when it disappears? Can I add it myself? I access the modem through admin and the area where the name is listed for the 5G connection is greyed out, and I can't do anything with it.

Temporary Line and Bandwidth

I have Cable Internet with CIKTel using a Cogeco line on a 40/10 package. My neighbour has Cogeco cable Internet directly but their cable was cut inadvertently a few months ago. Without my knowledge, Cogeco installed a 3-way splitter on the line into my house, and put a temporary cable from one of these ports into the neighbour's house to restore their connection. I have been suffering from intermittent Internet problems for a similar period of time, in that sometimes my connection is fine giving 40Mbps download but other times it only gives 4-5Mbps, or even less than 1Mbps at the worst times. It seemed fine previously. I rang Cogeco who said a temporary line would affect my bandwidth and if I was a direct customer I would have received compensation but would not deal with me as I was not a customer. My neighbour asked Cogeco to review and when they visited today to check they said that plugging 2 cable modems in separate properties into the same line has no effect on the bandwidth you receive which is entirely controlled by your provider. He did however find the signal level at my modem was marginal and by changing the 3-way splitter to a 2-way splitter improved this. Does anybody know which is actually correct?

[INTERNET] Bandwidth limits

I am still on the lowly UltraFibre 15 plan with only 95GB monthly limit. Normally we only use 30-40GB per month, except when the grandchildren come to visit. Just checked my Account and see some conflicting information. Details at top still show the 95GB limit, but in the bandwidth usage area it shows Unlimited. When I was speaking with Cogeco support, the 'verified' I was still on the 95 GB limit. Also I just noticed that the bandwidth listings have stopped as of Friday March 20. Any ideas??? Maybe some temporary adjustments due to having to stay at home because of Covid-19 pandemic???

HItron Coda 4589 + HT-EMN3 extender

I had these installed the other day. The HT-EMN3 extender was set to mirror the settings from the main router/modem... I am having some wifi issues where some google homes etc .are slow to respond. I believe it is because those devices are in an area of the home where the signal strength from both the modem and the extender are about the same. I think the devices enter into some kind of unstable state where they keep switching networks or something. I found the IP address of the extender, logged in. Turned mirroring off, set up a separate SSID for the extender. I connected devices to the appropriate AP (router or extender) and the issue seems to have gone away. I just did this now, so I'll have to wait and see if the problem comes back. Has anybody else fooled around with the extenders etc?

[INTERNET] Moca Adapter With Arris TG3452A

Has anyone tried any of the Actiontec moca adaptors with the Arris TG3452A? I’d like a wired connection to a spot on my property where there is coax, but running Ethernet isn’t feasible. I’m guessing that I’d only need one adaptor as I’m already using moca on the arris end for my TiVo setup. Anybody had any experience with this? Interested in any comments.

[TV] Cogeco wont send TiVo mini

Spoke with Cogeco about adding another TiVo mini. Despite the area where it would be going being already properly wired, and I know how to add it through the settings, they refused. They say a technician has to install, and of course techs are not doing house calls these days, totally understandable. I know when I had TiVo through Cogeco when it first came out I had a mini shipped to me a couple of times, in the spring when I want tv in the garage. Based on this (https://www.cogeco.ca/en/covid19updates) it looked like they’d send me the equipment in a ‘self install kit’. Nope.

[INTERNET] DHCP or Reserved ?

Just wondering if it is better to use a reserved IP address for each device on my network or leave it set to DHCP? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to either option. Maybe there is already a post on this subject but i have not located it yet, sorry if this is a duplicate question. Thanks

[INTERNET] Business static IP service, bridge modem and use firewall instead?

$

I'm moving soon, and looking at Cogeco for business cable internet. I'm looking for more information on how Cogeco's 5 static IP service works. At other ISPs, I've seen this service configured like this: WAN <---> Modem WAN interface (L3) <---> Modem LAN interface (L3) <---> Internal Computers <WAN IP> ^ <Subnet router IP> <Public IPs> Routing happens here I've heard techs called this a "bridged" configuration because there's no DHCP or WiFi enabled on the modem, but it's clearly still a layer 3 router, not a layer 2 bridge. What I want to do is use this with an actual layer 2 bridged modem, that is, like this: WAN <---> Modem (L2 bridge) <---> Firewall WAN interface (L3) <---> Firewall LAN interface (L3) <---> Internal Computers <WAN IP> ^ <Transit Network> <Public IPs> Routing happens here Questions I have: 1) With a modem provisioned for static IP service, will I be able to put my modem into bridge mode? My previous ISP claimed that it wasn't possible for me to log into the modem to bridge it (despite the fact that I was staring at the login screen and just needed the cusadmin password) 2) If so, how is the WAN IP assigned? Is it via DHCP based on my modem's WAN MAC, or is it hard-coded during provisioning? 3) How is the subnet for my static IPs routed? Is it statically routed to my assigned WAN IP, or does the modem advertise itself via a dynamic routing protocol like iBGP? In case you're wondering why I want to do it this way, I have a pretty significant lab network, with my edge firewall keeping my personal, guest, and lab environments separate. With my public IPs on a real L2 broadcast network, my firewall has to "own" each IP, which means I need to specify a NAT configuration for each possible combination of source and destination zone for each IP. By routing the subnet to my own firewall, I can route public IPs to a firewall or proxy within each zone, which means that my firewall only needs to worry about routing and ACLs. The end result to Cogeco is the same, it's just a different device that's acting as next-hop for the subnet. Thanks, -- - Adam

Switching from TG2472 to Modem only?

$

Currently using a TG2472 in bridge mode, I run my own pfsense router, all my TiVo mini's are connected via ethernet to my own switch, so there's no MoCA involved, I also don't subscribe to Cogeco phone so there's no need for the telephony ATA, is it possible to switch to a smaller modem such as the SB6183 (or modem of similar form factor, whatever Cogeco provides)? I want something that takes up less space on my networking shelf and preferably doesn't have the increased latency of the puma 6 chipset. Asking here before I call, don't wanna sit on hold for an hour just to be told there's no modem only offering.

Since November when I got gigabit installed it's been rock solid. The last 3 days once or twice a day I've had to reboot the modem to get the internet working. TV and phone continue just fine throughout. Actually even when rebooting the tv doesn't even shut off. Hitron coda-4589.

[INTERNET] Severe packet loss, they say it's Cogeco's fault

Hi. I'm a pretty unhappy TekSavvy customer who's been told that it's Cogeco's fault, and there is zero information from their side regarding when this issue is going to be fixed. This is in the north end of the Leamington, Ontario area. Here's what they say: said by uid://1849363 :Hi Matthew, that is understandably frustrating. I just checked on our last request for an ETR from our vendor, but still no reply to this time. This issue has been going on for over a week with no end in sight, and no details as to what the problem is - it's exceptionally frustrating to hear "it's broken we're fixing it". What is broken? What are you doing to fix it? How many more days/weeks/months is it going to take? There is no outages posted on the Cogeco outages page, so that doesn't help.
